Summary
Nishino Takako, (2007). Beginning to read
extensively: A case study with Mako and Fumi
This study investigated
about the beginning to read extensively with Mako and Fumi. This method of the
study was a case study with longitudinal on reading strategies and motivation.
Takako Nishino was using 2 of Japanese middle school students, their name were
Fumi and Mako. The researcher conducted the research for the period of 2,5 year
study with 4 times interviews, gave test regularly and observed the participant
behavior in each reading session. In this study, the first time researcher said
two motivations about the purposes of extensive reading: (a) to develop their English reading fluency and (b) to allow them to
enjoy the natural pleasure of reading. Researcher also freed them to choose
their own book, stop reading if you do not find an interesting book, and
reading for pleasure but researcher suggest not looking for an unknown word
through the dictionary and may ask him/her or consultation. Fumi and Mako read
4 times a week with 15 minutes per reading sessions. The results findings were “what reading strategies did the two
participants employ in extensive reading, particularly when they came across
unknown words?”. The researcher used 5 strategies to answer the questions
that are (1) referring to glossaries and
marginal glosses, (2) grouping words, (3) using background knowledge, (4)
guessing word meaning, evaluating guesses and learning vocabulary (5) using a
dictionary. In this case, Fumi preferred strategy of using dictionaries and
Mako more like to guess from context. The second result is “How did the participants ‘L2 reading motivation change during the 2,5
year extensive reading and how did the reading materials influence this
motivational change?”. The answer of the second question is motivation
increases when they read an interesting book or that they prefer. In
conclusion, the researcher reveal there are significant differences in the use
of reading strategies and motivation can be increased when we read the book
with pleasure.
