Nishino Takako, (2007). Beginning to read extensively: A case study with Mako and Fumi

This study investigated about the beginning to read extensively with Mako and Fumi. This method of the study was a case study with longitudinal on reading strategies and motivation. Takako Nishino was using 2 of Japanese middle school students, their name were Fumi and Mako. The researcher conducted the research for the period of 2,5 year study with 4 times interviews, gave test regularly and observed the participant behavior in each reading session. In this study, the first time researcher said two motivations about the purposes of extensive reading: (a) to develop their English reading fluency and (b) to allow them to enjoy the natural pleasure of reading. Researcher also freed them to choose their own book, stop reading if you do not find an interesting book, and reading for pleasure but researcher suggest not looking for an unknown word through the dictionary and may ask him/her or consultation. Fumi and Mako read 4 times a week with 15 minutes per reading sessions. The results findings were “what reading strategies did the two participants employ in extensive reading, particularly when they came across unknown words?”. The researcher used 5 strategies to answer the questions that are (1) referring to glossaries and marginal glosses, (2) grouping words, (3) using background knowledge, (4) guessing word meaning, evaluating guesses and learning vocabulary (5) using a dictionary. In this case, Fumi preferred strategy of using dictionaries and Mako more like to guess from context. The second result is “How did the participants ‘L2 reading motivation change during the 2,5 year extensive reading and how did the reading materials influence this motivational change?”. The answer of the second question is motivation increases when they read an interesting book or that they prefer. In conclusion, the researcher reveal there are significant differences in the use of reading strategies and motivation can be increased when we read the book with pleasure.
