Escalating Speaking skill through Self-Directed Role Play

(I) In this era, English is a language that very important to use because almost every country taking English as communication. Speaking is the easiest way to find someone is the master of English or not. (R) Although, in the school has been providing English lessons but still not every students can speak English well and fluently. There are barriers to be master of English as a lack of vocabulary, lack of practice, or shy. (G) However, the challenge for any English teacher is how to make students able to speak English fluently in school and outside. (F) This paper will describe how the teaching English particularly is speaking by using role play. Usually, role play done with group or pairs but this time, role play can use for individually. How that is done are (1) grumbling yourself with English (2) listen native speaker over and over again (3) record our own voice when speak English.

Most student difficulty to developing their speaking because there is no partner, but we can replace it by talking themselves by using English. Students can do this activity anywhere like: at home, at school, the park, or in places when she/he was alone or there is not a partner. This method can be done since the students were waking up. Although, doing this you look like crazy person that speak for themselves, but it will get used and formed an effective process to learn conversational English. Example, when the students at home and the students will open the door, they can say “open the door” while holding the handle. When at school, and they lost their pen or book they could say “where is my pen/book?” and when the park or somewhere they can say “oh this is beautiful place, this place is amazing”.

The second way to improve speaking skills is to multiply listen to native speakers. This step can help students to follow native speaker pronunciation and train and keep the memory of the vocabulary of students already use or are already memorized. Because we live in a digital era so that students can easily listen to audio or viewed of video internationally. For example, students could download audio or video native speakers in internet like download songs, movies or whatever they like in English. Students can also listen to streaming radio. One of website to streaming television is mivo.com. The website also provides a wide range of international channel, students can choose channel they want.

The third way is to record our own voice when speaking English. Although we could hear our own voice, but in this way can help students evaluate their speaking. Is it too fast, or too long in the thinking of the vocabulary and can evaluate their grammar. When students listen the voice of their own, students can know their shortcomings when speaking English. For example, students can read English books aloud and record it and then listen to the recording, then find out the weaknesses and errors in saying something and then checked and the last is to fix the error.

In conclusion, English is important in this era to study English particularly is speaking can be easy for many students if they know how to do it the right way. Role play usually used a pairs, but this time we can use role play by themselves without the help of others. Role play is the right way to improve students' speaking abilities in three ways: first, speak for themselves using the English, second often listen native speaker speaks, and the last is to record our own voice.
